☞ Volunteers Association for Bangladesh (VAB) is a New York based non-profit charity organization formed in 1998 by expatriate Bangladeshis and their non-Bangladeshi friends lead by UN retired Officer Dr. AT Rafiqur Rahman. VAB is the only NGO in Bangladesh who are working only Secondary Education sector during last 23 years.
Mission: To empower the rural poor and the disadvantaged youth in Bangladesh for a better life. Vision: To reduce high school dropouts and promoting quality education and skill training in rural Bangladesh.
Goals: VAB's initial goal was to support high school education of students from poorest families with scholarships and provide vocational training.
Principle of VAB: The principle of volunteerism has allowed VAB to keep its educational costs low as well; donors get on the highest returns on their investments.
Legal Identity of VAB: VAB was registered with New York State and gained approval from the US Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt charity organization (IRS Tax Exempt ID 13-4034550) in 1999. In Bangladesh , VAB was registered as Foreign NGO under NGO Affairs Bureau in 2006. Now VAB has a permanent office in Bangladesh, Adabor, Dhaka.
Operation of VAB: VAB has parallel organizations in Bangladesh and the USA. While the VAB USA focuses on policy formulation, planning and fundraising, the VAB Bangladesh implements VAB programs with the schools, monitors their performance, conducts research on their effectiveness, and develops ways of increasing their impact. ☞ VAB works with existing high schools within the existing education system of Bangladesh. After accepting a rural school for sponsorship it quickly provides supports to students from poorest families, attempts to identify the weaknesses of the school and then looks for ways to improve them with the ultimate aim of developing it to a "high standard" institution so that it can offer quality education to all students.
Why VAB works in High School Education and Skill Training? As high school education seemed to be the minimum qualification for gainful employment that could at the same time be obtained at the lowest cost, VAB decided to focus on this level of education. Within the general lack of investment in education, there was and still is, a relative neglect of high school education. The government pays much less attention to high school education than to primary education. Vocational skill training the similar cost and benefit advantages. VAB thus added this dimension to its focus. Bangladesh has very limited vocational training opportunities for those that do not finish their education. VAB’s skills training program to help unemployment youth gain the relevant skills for the available job market. The job market orientation distinguishes VAB as a partner in the economic development process of the country. When VAB began its services in Bangladesh in 2000 with $10,000 donations, half the money went to support 100 scholarships in 10 high schools and the other half went to a vocational institution in rural areas. Appeal to Patrons/Donors VAB is planning to award stipends that include educational and living expenses for underperforming students as well as bright students. VAB works with the most underprivileged students and schools in the most underprivileged areas of Bangladesh.
